Heijo Palace wooden tablet no. 2206
Tablet 2206 labels hishio, a fermented seasoning, from Bizen. Its strongest interpretive feature is its relationship to other labels, rather than a claim that an ancient sauce was identical to one sold today.
A place and product, with limits
The museum associates the origin with the area around present-day Setouchi in Okayama while noting that the precise location is not settled. It interprets hishio as a fermented-soybean seasoning comparable to soy sauce. “Comparable” should remain a comparison; the record is not a chemical analysis or a recipe.

The importance of a small group
The commentary relates this object to tablets 2207 and 2208 from the same location, noting similar shapes and what appears to be the same handwriting. That opens a question about repeated administration. It does not prove that the three were written on the same day or travelled in one consignment. Only 2206 is included in this GIZUMO sample.

A practical research path
When following this up, carry both the tablet number 2206 and collection reference 6AACHM27000098. Ask whether a comparison is about handwriting, origin, commodity or find context; those are different research axes. Pair the record here with the ayu shipping label to compare goods, or with the sake labels to compare kinds of labelling.
