Heijo Palace wooden tablet no. 2319

平城宮2319号木簡

Heijo Palace tablet 2319 shows how a few written characters on wood can preserve an everyday administrative distinction: it is a label for clear sake.

The short text carries a question

The museum commentary reads the label as clear sake and treats the final character, “middle”, as a possible grade. That last interpretation is tentative. It would be inaccurate to turn it into a firm modern quality classification or to infer a recipe from the label.

Compare it with tablet 2318

The neighbouring record 2318 gives a quantity, while 2319 offers a possible grade. Read together, they show different kinds of information a label can preserve. The comparison is editorial; neither consecutive catalogue numbers nor a common find area proves that the two labels belonged to the same vessel or transaction.

Read form alongside text

The museum notices the broad, fine-grained wood and roomy writing. In the source image, compare the spacing and edges before concentrating only on the inscription. No image is reproduced here, and no modern sake category, maker or tasting characteristic should be inferred. The record explicitly includes National Treasure designation; current display is still a separate question.
