Narihira shu Poetry Anthology Segment, Known as ”Ogata gire”

業平集(尾形切)

The “Ogata gire” is a fragment with a history of separation. Reading it well means distinguishing the surviving leaf, the earlier book and the traditional attribution of its handwriting.

A fragment from a larger anthology

The museum commentary connects the leaf to the Narihira collection within the Honganji manuscripts of the Thirty-six Poets. It says the book had been divided by the early Edo period, with only a limited number of leaves surviving. The name “Ogata gire” is linked tentatively to the Ogata family; the commentary does not present that derivation as certain.

Do not turn attribution into a date

The source says “attributed to Fujiwara no Kinto (966–1041)” but dates the object to the twelfth century. Preserve both fields and the word “attributed”. An editorial reading is that a traditional attribution and the catalogue’s object dating are different claims; silently making them agree would destroy useful evidence.

Designation belongs to the identified object

A reference to a National Treasure parent manuscript does not by itself establish this detached leaf’s designation. This entry’s designation field is blank. Use B-2448 for the particular fragment, and seek the museum’s image and full catalogue before discussing its brushwork, paper or exact text. Those features have not been visually examined here.
